How to Prepare for an Acupuncture Treatment
Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. Points around the knee and below, and from around the elbow and below are very common.

Eat something, but not a large meal, just before or after your visit. Avoid overexertion from working out, using drugs or alcohol at least 4-6 hours prior to treatment. Do not come to acupuncture intoxicated. If you are intoxicated, the treatment will not work.

What to Expect during your Acupuncture Treatment
During your first acupuncture treatment, fine, sterile needles will be inserted at specific acupuncture points along the meridian pathways related to specific organs, based on your unique issues and symptoms. Upon insertion, you may feel a unique sensation that Oriental medicine calls "de qi". Patients often describe de qi as a heavy, achy pressure, or spreading, traveling feeling. You may also feel an "electrical" sensation moving down the meridian pathways, though this is less common. Most patients find these acupuncture sensations deeply satisfying and leave the treatment feeling relaxed both mentally and physically.

Once we gather enough information, you'll receive a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan that explains your underlying imbalances, your time line of care (how many and the frequency of visits), and the types of treatments you'll receive. Other therapies may be suggested as part of your treatment, such as herbal medicine, tui na, cupping or moxibustion.

Getting the Most Out of Your Acupuncture Treatment

  • Please show up on time
  • Don't eat a large meal before your visit
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes
  • Discuss any questions or concerns with your acupuncturist during your appointment.
  • Refrain from overexertion, drugs or alcohol for at least six hours after treatment
  • Follow your treatment plan between visits
  • Keep all of your appointments, as each visit builds upon the previous ones.

Your Role in the Healing Process
Even after your symptoms are resolved, acupuncture can assist you in maintaining your health, and possibly prevent future imbalances. The more you incorporate acupuncture and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) into your life, the more you will learn how to nurture your body, your mind, and your spirit. Make self-care a priority. Understand self-care is a necessity, not a luxury.

Not an Instant Fix
True healing takes time and dedication. Depending on your current health and symptoms, you could feel better right away, or you may need treatments for weeks, months or years to achieve the results you want. We give you an idea of what to expect. With a little patience and an open mind, you'll be on your way to health and vitality.
