Frequently Asked Questions
How many treatments will I need?
The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative, so more than one treatment is necessary. To maximize the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments, it's important to maintain an appropriate treatment schedule. While there is no such thing as receiving treatments too close together, receiving them too far apart can impede progress. Acupuncture treatments build cumulatively, and we strive to build upon the progress made in each session to prevent the reemergence of symptoms. For optimal results, we typically recommend twice-weekly treatments for the first 1-2 weeks, and then reducing to once weekly if symptoms remain stable. Once symptoms are resolved, we transition into a maintenance phase with "tune-up" treatments scheduled once a month.
While initial changes in symptoms may be noticeable after the first treatment, it typically takes 3-4 treatments to experience more lasting improvements. In cases of chronic or difficult conditions, it may take 6-10 treatments to see significant results. As each individual's case is unique, treatment plans are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient.
How safe is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a highly safe and effective therapeutic approach when administered by licensed acupuncturists who undergo extensive graduate-level training in the practice, typically lasting 3-4 years. These professionals are trained with great rigor in anatomy and the precise techniques required for the safe and expert insertion of needles into the body.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
The sensations experienced during an acupuncture treatment can vary from person to person. While some may feel a slight pinching sensation during needle insertion, others may not feel anything at all. The needles used are very thin, only slightly larger than a cat or dog's whisker, and may produce sensations such as numbness, heaviness, tingling, or dull ache. Some patients may also experience a "Qi sensation," which is a feeling of energy spreading throughout the body. These sensations are normal and indicate that the treatment is working effectively.
What should I wear?
For optimal comfort during your acupuncture treatment, we recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing. During the treatment, the practitioner will need access to acupuncture points that are distal to the elbows and knees, as well as your back. The practitioner will drape your body to ensure that you feel comfortable and covered at all times.
